During the 1700s the Wirral peninsula was one of the most active smuggling districts in northwest England. The long coastline, hidden inlets and easy access to both the Irish Sea and the River Mersey made it perfect for illegal landings. Communities were small and isolated, so locals could easily warn each other about customs officers.
